Breakdancing at Incheon's Cultureport

Walking briskly through the arrivals terminal at Incheon airport with the sole purpose of picking up my jetlagged mother, I surely didn’t expect to be bombarded with hip-hop breakbeats and high-flying acrobatic dancing. But like a bolt of lightning the performance erupted out of nowhere, and my mom and I—seconds before having the simple and focused goal of getting from the airport to the hotel as quickly as possible—found ourselves captivated by the beautifully chaotic performance: the swirling bodies of colorful limbs, spinning and launching themselves with equal grace and abandon, choreographed perfectly to their cinematic, bass-heavy rhythms.

Break-dancing is relatively new trend in Korea, but its explosion in popularity, especially amongst extremely dedicated and talented young dancers, has led to Koreans being arguably the best break-dancers in the world. This is something that the typical visitor to Korea—for instance my mom—would likely neither know before coming here, nor discover while here, unless lucky. Now, because of Incheon’s new Cultureport program, these visitors can be lucky enough to experience first-hand, upon immediately entering the country, these very facets of Korea’s rich and cosmopolitan culture that might have otherwise not revealed themselves. It’s truly a special program that shouldn’t be missed by anyone traveling through Incheon.
